Aragorn

Aragorn

Aragorn, son of Arathorn, is a Ranger known as Strider, a direct descendant of Elendil and Isildur. He is the greatest traveler and huntsman of his age, standing at least 6 feet 6 inches tall, with a weather-beaten appearance, often cloaked and hooded.

Appearance

  • Described as a strange-looking, weather-beaten man sitting in shadows, with a tall tankard, long-stemmed pipe, high boots caked in mud, travel-stained dark-green cloak, and hood overshadowing his face, with gleaming eyes watching the hobbits.

Strength

  • Stands at least 6 feet 6 inches tall as a direct descendant of Elendil and Isildur, who were seven feet tall. ([Tolkien Papers, Bodleian Library, Oxford])
  • Moves through breast-high snow on a mountain, creating a small path while toiling heavily with Boromir.
  • Strikes with sword hard enough to split a metal helmet and one-shot the orc wearing it.
  • Effortlessly picks up and carries Frodo, who is under 3 feet tall.
  • Crashes through trees while drawing his sword and crying ‘Elendil!’.
  • Knocks orcs off a cliff by charging and breaking their shield wall like a lightning-stroke.

Combat Speed

  • Blocks sword swings from average warriors in many battles.
  • Dodges arrows from numerous orc-archers while fighting wild soldiers, making it difficult for average fodder archers to tag him.

Travel Speed

  • Outpaces Sam Gamgee, who can blitz an Orc Captain. (source)
  • Runs like fire along a wall and up steps into the outer court.
  • Covers forty to forty-five leagues (about 155 miles) in four days with the Fellowship, including one without sleep.

Durability

Skill

  • Greatest traveler and huntsman in the world over the last 3,000 years, according to Gandalf.
  • Reads Frodo’s footprints and deduces he ran to the hill-top and returned the same way.
  • Identifies Pippin’s smaller hobbit footprints from the grass.
  • Examines tracks and deduces orcs rested at a location and estimates their travel pace to reach Fangorn borders at sundown yesterday.
  • Kills the leader of the wargs (super-wolves) with a thrust through the throat.
  • One-shots an orc captain, causing the rest to flee in terror.
  • Holds back orcs on a stairway with the terror of his sword Andúril, allowing others to pass to safety.

Intelligence

  • Heals Sam’s non-deep orc wound, identifies it as not poisoned, and tends it to heal well.
  • Steeps athelas in water to bathe hurts, refreshing and strengthening those who smell the pungent fragrance.
  • Keeps Frodo alive after a poisoned Morgul-knife stab by using athelas leaves, singing over the dagger hilt, and applying the healing plant despite its limited power against such wounds.
  • Uses ‘healing hands of the King’ by crushing athelas leaves in water to awaken Faramir from fever, then heals Éowyn and Merry by touch and kiss, and tends wounded throughout the night.
  • Deduces orc riders on wargs from their howls.
  • Analyzes dead orcs’ appearance and realizes some are from the North and Misty Mountains, not Mordor.
  • Estimates orcs’ position at sundown based on old trail age and pace.
  • Fluent in many Middle-earth languages, including reading Elvish books and maps.

Senses

  • First to see bird spies in the sky.
  • Sees small hobbit footprints in wet earth and forest.
  • First in the Fellowship, including Legolas, to detect a dark swift-moving blur on the distant green.
  • First to recognize wolves (wargs) howling in the wind.
  • Hears Frodo drawing his sword while sleeping and feels something in his sleep.
  • Easily detects Gollum, who can sneak up on orcs and catch fish/birds bare-handed, as he padded after the group through Moria.
  • Senses the presence of orcs through a growing shadow and threat in sleep, confirmed by Sting’s gleam.

Misc

  • Matches Sauron in a mental battle using the Stone of Orthanc, proclaiming his title and judging his strength sufficient.
  • Hides in a dark corner unnoticed by Mr. Butterbur and Nob in the same room.
