Demogorgon

Demogorgon

An antagonistic creature from the parallel dimension known as the Upside Down. After psychic contact with a test subject named Eleven, the Demogorgon became aware of our reality and was happy to have a new hunting ground. It stalked the town of Hawkins, Indiana for about a week, killing people and dragging them to its realm, but Eleven was eventually able to destroy it. The Demogorgon we see in the first season is actually just one of a species of monsters, with another one named Dart going on to feature in the second. Dart starts off as a slug and slowly grows into a dog-like creature, which is really the life stage before a Demogorgon is fully grown and is able to walk upright.

General Species Information

  • The Demo-dogs in season 2 and possibly the entire species are all mentally connected to an Upside Down entity called the Mind Flayer.
  • Dr. Owens compares the Mind Flayer’s control to an intelligent virus that links those who are infected. (source) (S2E6)
  • This hivemind links together all members of the species as well as links them together with other entities controlled by the Mind Flayer. (source) (S2E8)
  • The Demo-dogs are able to feel the pain of a bunch of tentacles lit on fire in the Hawkins tunnels. (source) (S2E9)
  • The adolescent dog-like Demogorgons all die off when the Gate that links the Upside Down and the ordinary world is destroyed, severing their link to the Mind Flayer. (source) (S2E9)
  • This is because the Mind Flayer acts as their “brain” when they’re under its control, and the Gate severing the link is similar to someone losing their brain. (source) (S2E9)
  • The Mind Flayer can control the swarm of Demo-dogs over this link (here through Will, who he is also controlling). (source) (S2E8)
  • It’s estimated that there’s hundreds of Demo-dogs that were able to come through the Gate at the research lab at the end of the second season. (source) (S2E9)

Fully Grown - Strength

  • Pins down Jonathan. (source) (S1E8)
  • Drags Barb into an empty pool (edited to remove a sex scene spliced in). (source) (S1E3)
  • While clinging to the ceiling, drags a man upwards and kills him. (source) (S1E1)
  • After a guy on a metal line enters the Gate to the Upside Down, the Demogorgon attacks and kills him off-screen so all the line brings back is a piece of metal from his hazmat suit. (source) (S1E4)
  • Slashed up a deer off-screen. (source) (S1E5)
  • Attacked two hunters off-screen. (source) (S1E5)
  • When we see one of them in the comic, his chest has been torn up badly. (source) (C3)
  • Tears into that hunter’s chest with his maw. (source) (C4)
  • The Russian one we see at the end of Season 3 is able to easily kill a man chomping its head off-screen. (source) (S3E8)
  • Busts down a door. (source) (S1E8)
  • Breaks apart a wooden fort. (source) (S1E7)
  • More of the damage can be seen here. (source) (S1E8)
  • Same feat in metaphorical comic form. (source) (C4)
  • Busts through a ceiling. (source) (S1E8)
  • Busts through a stone brick wall. (source) (S1E8)

Fully Grown - Durability

  • Unaffected by slingshot shots. (source) (S1E8)
  • Possibly takes gunshots from a pistol, it’s unclear if they’re landing. (source) (S1E8)
  • Definitely takes gunshots from a pistol. (source) (S1E8)
  • Takes getting beaten with a baseball bat. (source) (S1E8)
  • The baseball bat had been spiked with nails. (source) (S1E8)
  • After those above three feats and getting its leg caught in a bear trap and getting set on fire, it’s able to teleport away to the Upside Down. (source) (S1E8)
  • Runs to a school while bleeding. (source) (S1E8)
  • Teleports back and continues its rampage completely visibly unhindered by any injury. (source) (S1E8)
  • Takes tons of automatic gunfire from multiple sources. (source) (S1E8)
  • Takes more automatic gunfire off-screen, then even more before busting down a door. It’s perfectly fine. (source) (S1E8)
  • Takes a shot from a hunting rifle. He kinda just vanishes after, he could be running off or teleporting or something. (source) (C1)
  • We see him later in the same issue and he’s alright. (source) (C1)
  • Takes a shot from a hunting rifle again. It definitely seems to hit him this time at least, but he vanishes. (source) (C2)
  • Eleven slams the monster into a chalkboard hard enough to break it and twist the metal: it’s still alive, but trapped in place by her telekinesis. She has to resort to evaporating it into dust with her powers to bring it down for good. Once it’s gone, we can get a better look at the damage that was done to the chalkboard. (source) (S1E8)

Fully Grown - Speed and Agility

  • Appears abruptly in the middle of the road. (source) (S1E1)
  • Surprises Jonathan from behind. (source) (S1E8)
  • Pounces on Brenner. (source) (S1E8)
  • In the comic, the Demogorgon is quickly able to vanish away after being shot. (source) (C1)
  • Vanishes twice after being shot. (source) (C2)
  • Climbs along tree branches and runs towards Will’s fort on all fours. (source) (C4)

Fully Grown - Connection to the Upside Down - Teleportation

  • The Demogorgon is capable of teleporting from its homeworld of the Upside Down to the ordinary world. It can pull other beings back with it.
  • Here he takes a kid named Will to the Upside Down after already having traveled to the ordinary world. The kid just seems to vanish. (source) (S1E1)
  • Comic version: Here we can see the Demogorgon pulled him there from outside of the shed, despite there being a closed door in the way. (source) (C1)
  • Pulls Barb to the Upside Down from behind. The Upside Down is basically a mirror image of our world, but structures are decayed and there’s strange vines growing over everything. (source) (S1E2-3 (clips have been edited together but happen subsequently))
  • He’s still able to teleport to the Upside Down after taking a string of injuries. (source) (S1E8)
  • Sometimes when he enters the ordinary world from the Upside Down, it appears as him bursting out of a wall as if it were elastic. (source) (S1E3)
  • Here’s what this looks like on the other side. (source) (C2)
  • Residue and radiation are left behind in the spots where the Demogorgon travels to and from the Upside Down. (source) (S1E2)

Fully Grown - Connection to the Upside Down - Portals / “Wounds”

  • When the Demogorgon teleports in, it creates a fleshy portal that leads to and from the Upside Down. (source) (S1E5)
  • These “scab over” over time, rendering them unusable. How long exactly that is is unclear. (source) (S1E6)
  • Sometimes these end up looking more like sheets of glass where you can see the Upside Down on the other side without being able to go through. (source) (S1E4)
  • In the comic, these wall type ones are so hard a chair shatters against the clear surface. (source) (C3)
  • An interview with the Duffer Brothers (the creators of the show) explain these fleshy portals and windows as being “wounds” in our dimension created whenever the Demogorgon breaches to hunt. They basically reiterate that, like wounds, they seal up over time. (source)
  • According to a random science teacher, the Demogorgon’s ability to create portals from the Upside Down to the real one should take a pretty outrageous amount of energy. He says it’s more than humans can make, but this is likely an exaggeration, and again he’s just some random science teacher from Indiana. (source) (S1E5)

Fully Grown - Connection to the Upside Down - Properties of the Upside Down

  • As mentioned above, the Upside Down is a dark duplicate of the real world which exists parallel to it.
  • People in the Upside Down are able to affect electrical objects in the real world by interacting with their duplicates, in this case a phone. (source) (S1E2)
  • For reference, here’s Will’s side of the interaction in the comic. (source) (C2)
  • Joyce and Will Byers use this to communicate using Christmas lights from one world to the other. (source) (S1E3)
  • According to the Duffer Brothers, Will was able to manipulate the lights without them being there in the Upside Down because of the different electromagnetic field in the Upside Down. (source) (From YouTube: Stranger Things Rewatch | Behind the Scenes: Duffer Brothers on Christmas Lights | Netflix)
  • Sounds in the real world can be faintly heard in the Upside Down. (source) (S1E8)
  • The Upside Down has a toxic atmosphere. (source) (S1E8)
  • After a while of running, Will started to succcumb to this atmosphere and began seeing hallucinations of his D&D campaign. (source) (C4)

Fully Grown - Connection to the Upside Down - Other

  • In the comic, the Demogorgon maybe has the ability to teleport while in the Upside Down: he’s shown vanishing. (source) (C1)
  • Vanishes twice after being shot, though this could just be him running away or going to the real world, it’s unclear. (source) (C2)

Fully Grown - Physiology and Behavior - General

  • Shows intelligence, clinging onto a ceiling to get the drop on a man. (source) (S1E1)
  • When hunting down Will, shows intelligence again when it uses its telekinesis to unlatch a door from the outside instead of bashing right through. (source) (S1E1)
  • Despite walking upright most of the time when we see it in the show, it’s shown hunting on all fours in the comic. (source) (C3)
  • It’s shown hunting on all fours multiple times, befitting of its earlier stages. (source) (C3)
  • The Russian Demogorgon also walks on all fours briefly. (source) (S3E8)

Fully Grown - Physiology and Behavior - Senses

  • The Demogorgon is attracted to blood like a shark and it hunts alone like a bear. (source) (S1E6)
  • The Demogorgon’s sense of smell seems to work from the Upside Down to the real world. In the real world, Barb cuts her finger and the blood drips into a pool, and the Demogorgon is able to smell it and arrives in the real world to drag her to the Upside Down. (source) (S1E2)
  • This is shown again when Nancy and Jonathan cut their hands in the real world to attract it to the Byer residence from the Upside Down, and again when the blood of some people Eleven killed in the real world is sufficient to attract it all the way from the Byer residence to the school where Eleven had killed the people. (source) (S1E8)
  • Gets distracted by a rock thrown at a tree near it. Somehow it has a sense of sound despite not having ears. (source) (C3)
  • Manages to hear Will singing quietly from pretty far away. (source) (C4)
  • In the show, we can hear how quietly he was singing. (source) (S1E7)

Fully Grown - Physiology and Behavior - Nest / Reproduction

  • After catching Will (and Barb, also), the Demogorgon brings them to some kind of nest and puts a tube in Will’s mouth off-screen. (source) (S1E8)
  • The tube being in him caused him to eventually vomit up a slug that grows over time into a Demogorgon, being the first stage in its life cycle. (source) (S1E8)
  • Comic version of the Demogorgon’s nest. (source) (C4)

Fully Grown - Electronic Interference

  • Wherever it goes, electronics tend to mess up. In this case, the lights on the Wheeler household blink out for a second when it’s nearby. (source) (S1E1)
  • The TV goes on the fritz as well. (source) (S1E1)
  • A phone quits working when it draws near Will’s house. (source) (S1E1)
  • Christmas lights freak out when he shows up. (source) (S1E3)
  • A flashlight Nancy’s carrying starts flickering when she gets close to the Demogorgon. She’s in the Upside Down, but flashlights have been shown to work fine there despite the different electrical field. (source) (S1E5)
  • School lights strobe uncontrollably before it arrives and the entire time he’s there. (source) (S1E8)

Fully Grown - Telekinesis / Telepathy

  • Undoes a latch on a door from the other side. (source) (S1E1)
  • Pulls in a deer’s corpse. (source) (S1E5)
  • After Eleven first accidentally contacts him, the Demogorgon started trying to call her. (source) (S1E6)
  • Eleven was able to make a second successful psychic connection with him from the ordinary world to the Upside Down. (source) (S1E6)

Adolescent Stages - First Stage

  • Starts up as a slug vomited up by someone who was implanted with a tube by a fully grown Demogorgon. (source) (S1E8)

Adolescent Stages - Second Stage

  • Grows into a fat tadpole-like creature called a pollywog. (source) (S2E3)
  • It’s able to rattle around a trash can, despite being really tiny. (source) (S2E2)
  • Doesn’t like bright lights or heat lamps. (source) (S2E3)
  • It does like Three Musketeers, however. (source) (S2E3)

Adolescent Stages - Third Stage

  • Grows from there into a fatter frog-like creature, sprouting legs. It’s able to move around a metal trap its in. (source) (S2E3)
  • Still likes Three Musketeers. (source) (S2E4)

Adolescent Stages - Fourth Stage

  • The next stage is cat-sized and quadripedal, this is where it starts to show the trademark “petal” mouth. It was able to break out of a glass terrarium and kill and eat Dusty’s cat off-screen. (source) (S2E4)
  • Was able to be lured by a trail of salami. (source) (S2E5)
  • Even when lead on by the salami, it’s able to break off the trail and sniff out where Dusty was hiding. (source) (S2E5)
  • Recovers after getting smacked down some stairs with a hockey stick. (source) (S2E5)

Adolescent Stages - Fifth Stage (Demo-dog) - Strength - Solo

  • Dart managed to break through a cinderblock wall and tunnel into the ground. (source) (S2E6)
  • One leaves clawmarks on metal. (source) (S2E6)
  • One pierces through a sheet of metal with their claws. (source) (S2E6)
  • One walking on top of a bus causes it to shake and indents the ceiling. (source) (S2E6)
  • One pounces on a man and kills him. (source) (S2E8)
  • One’s able to bust through some locked doors and pounce on Bob, clawing him deeply. (source) (S2E8)
  • Some other Demo-dogs knock the doors he came through off their hinges as he continues to maul Bob further. (source) (S2E8)

Adolescent Stages - Fifth Stage (Demo-dog) - Strength - In Groups

  • A group of them shake a bus slamming into it. (source) (S2E6)
  • A horde of them pick off soldiers one by one. (source) (S2E6)
  • Together, they’re able to scale a sheer surface and break through polycarbonate glass. (source) (S2E8)
  • A group busts a metal door off its hinges. (source) (S2E8)
  • Several of them break apart wood headbutting it. (source) (S2E8)
  • A pack of them kills and eats a group of scientists. (source) (S2E8)
  • As a large pack, they’re able to slaughter tons of of the personnel of the Hawkins lab and basically take the place over. (source) (S2E8)

Adolescent Stages - Fifth Stage (Demo-dog) - Durability

  • One is able to recover after getting beaten with a spiked baseball bat. (source) (S2E6)
  • Steve spends some time beating on another one with that bat up until the Demo-dogs are all summoned away, it’s unclear if that one got up and left but it possibly did, possibly didn’t. (source) (S2E6)
  • Unlike the fully grown stage, these guys are susceptible to bullets. (source) (S2E9)
  • One is shown possibly taking some gunshots though. (source) (S2E8)

Adolescent Stages - Fifth Stage (Demo-dog) - Speed and Agility

  • Two of them chase after Steve, with one able to pounce up and into a car. (source) (S2E6)
  • A pack of them manages to run down a hallway to a closing elevator and get inside before the door comes all the way down. (source) (S2E6)
  • One nearly catches up with Bob chasing after him, but he’s able to slam a door to stop it in time. (source) (S2E8)
  • They’re able to climb on sheer surfaces and leap over to an elevator cab suspended pretty far away. (source) (S2E9)

Adolescent Stages - Fifth Stage (Demo-dog) - Physiology and Abilities

  • They can still be lured with food: Dusty and Steve leave down a trail of chopped meat and that’s able to lure in Dart. (source) (S2E6)
  • The pack of Demo-dogs at the end of the season seem to cause the lights to go out one after the other in the Hawkins lab. (source) (S2E8)
  • This is called a power outage and it’s fixed by just switching on some breakers. (source) (S2E8)
  • Later on after the power is fixed, some of the lights in the building are flashing and some lights nearby the Demo-dogs are strobing like they do when the adult Demogorgon is near. (source) (S2E9)
  • Bob is able to distract one by turning on a sprinkler to draw him to the sound. (source) (S2E8)
  • Dart, the one Dusty raised on Three Musketeers, is able to recognize Dusty and lets him pass after he gives him some candy. (source) (S2E9)

Dead by Daylight - Strength

  • Kills a Survivor by pouncing on them, attacking with his claws, and biting their head viciously in his Memento Mori animation. (source)
  • With several slashes, can leave Survivors damaged and crawling on the ground. (source)
  • Can break wooden pallets with claw swipes. (source)
  • Can break certain walls with claw swipes. (source)
  • Its special Shred attack can destroy pallets. (source)
  • Its special Shred attack can destroy walls as well. (source)
  • Can damage generators, making them malfunction for a bit. (source)
  • Can carry around Survivors and impale them on large hanging hooks around the map. (source)
  • An Add-on description references the Demogorgon tearing the heart out of another creature in the Upside Down. (source)
  • One of the purchasable costumes for the Demogorgon depicts one that escaped capture from some unknown group. The descriptions of the different costume pieces mention how it was able to kill three men trying to subdue it and how it could break apart metal chains. (source)

Dead by Daylight - Speed and Agility

  • Chasing down and killing Survivors is the aim of the game. (source)
  • The Demogorgon’s movement speed as quantified by in-game numbers is 4.6 meters per second. (source) (4.6 meters per second)
  • Its quick lunging Shred attack has an in-game speed of 18.4 meters per second. (source) (18.4 meters per second)

Dead by Daylight - Of The Abyss - Portals

  • The Demogorgon’s in-game ability is called Of The Abyss. Its connection to the Upside Down allows the creature to create portals to travel through. They begin “inactive” and invisible to Survivors, but the Demogorgon using one causes it to become active. After this, they can be used to detect the locations of Survivors, but Survivors can also seal them. In addition, Of The Abyss gives him a speedy lunging claw attack called Shred. (source) (Site and in-game descriptions)
  • This clip from the showcase power shows what the portals look like and how he can place them down on surfaces, though has a limited number. According to both this and the descriptions linked above, the Demogorgon is travelng through the Upside Down when going through its portals. (source)
  • As a baseline, the Demogorgon starts a Trial with six portals to place. (source)
  • Here’s what going through a portal looks like. It’s not instantaneous. Also, Demogorgon is briefly given the Undetectable status effect after coming out of a portal. (source)
  • He can detect when a Survivor is near one of his portals with the game’s “Killer Instinct” feature (separate from the Aura system that the game also has). It’s the orange spiderweb effect that pulses over an outline of the Survivor. (source)
  • Here’s what a Survivor sealing a portal looks like. They can only see and seal “active portals,” and portals don’t become active until the Demogorgon has gone through them at least once, which you can see happen at the beginning here. (source)
  • He can tell when one of his portals has been sealed. He gets a notification of where it happened and the number on the counter goes up. (source)

Dead by Daylight - Of The Abyss - Shred

  • Shred is the name of the lunging melee attack granted by Of The Abyss. (source)
  • It has an in-game speed of 18.4 meters per second. (source) (18.4 meters per second)
  • Shred can be used to close the distance or just as an attack. (source)
  • Shred has a maximum distance of 11 meters. (source)
  • Shred requires a brief charge before being used, which can be canceled. (source)

Dead by Daylight - Perks

  • When the Demogorgon leaves an enemy crawling on the ground with a basic attack, all generators in a 32 meter radius explode and start regressing. (source) (Surge)
  • Each time a generator is repaired, all ledges and other spots Survivors can vault over in a 32 meter radius are blocked off for some time. (source) (Cruel Limits)
  • Whenever a Survivor is repairing a generator, they suffer from the Exhausted status effect for the duration of the action and a little while after. (source) (Mindbreaker)
  • The Exhausted status effect prevents a Survivor from from using sprint abilities. (source)
  • Each of these three perks has an in-game description with a quote credited to the Hawkins National Laboratory that gives an in-universe explanation for the abilities. For Surge, the Demogorgon has some level of control over electricity and electronics, for Mindbreaker the Demogorgon has telepathic abilities capable of inducing dread and fatigue in those nearby, and for Cruel Limits the Demogorgon can affect the state of nearby objects due to them existing in the Upside Down. (source)

Dead by Daylight - Add-ons

  • Rotten Pumpkin add-on. (source)
  • Black Heart add-on. (source)
  • Rat Liver add-on. (source)
  • Rat Tail add-on. (source)

  • Leprose Lichen add-on. (source)
  • Red Moss add-on. (source)

Dead by Daylight - Other

  • The same kind of electronic disruption caused by the Demogorgon in the show is possibly shown in its reveal trailer, with a set of TVs blinking off as it draws close. (source)
  • The Demogorgon’s official spotlight trailer and website bio give it the same kind of Discovery Channel description talking about how deadly its teeth and claws are and how naturally vicious it is. (source)
  • Two of the purchasable alternate costumes portray different mutated Demogorgons: the Twisted Demogorgon has experienced weird crustacean-like physical changes due to exposure to the Fog from Dead by Daylight lore. (source)
  • The Geo Mutation Demogorgon has grown chitinous stone armor. (source)
  • Every Killer in the game has something called a Red Stain, a light on the ground which shows Survivors where they’re currently looking at. This is actually mentioned in the game’s lore as more than just a game mechanic, though it presumably applies to them only because of some effect of the crossover environment. (source)

Seven Deadly Sins: Grand Cross - General

  • In the opening cutscene, they’re shown to be much more fodder-y to the Seven Deadly Sins cast than they are in the in-game fights. (source)
  • Their fire weakness is more apparent here, as Escanor (a fire magic guy) is easily able to take them out. (source)

Seven Deadly Sins: Grand Cross - Demogorgons

  • One leaps through the air and smashes part of a stone fountain with a claw swipe. (source)
  • One kills a woman. (source)
  • One drags several people to the Upside Down and kills them off-screen. (source)
  • In-game, all Demogorgons attack with claw swipes and bites. (source)
  • Three basic Demogorgons are faced as bosses. The standard kind is called “Enhanced” for some reason, despite there being no “unenhanced” Demogorgons faced and it clearly being just a regular Demogorgon in the story. They can take a ton of hits from Hopper, Gilthunder, Griamore, and Howzer before going down. (source)
  • In the context of the story, the one faced by Hopper is able to run off and escape after its defeat in boss fights. (source)
  • One of the ones faced by the three Holy Knights is able to run off and escape after its defeat in boss fights. (source)
  • Near the end of the event, one Demogorgon identified as a “Vicious Predator Demogorgon” is faced as a boss. It has black spikes on its body and is able to heal itself with regeneration and inflict a venom status effect on opponents. (source)

Seven Deadly Sins: Grand Cross - Demo-dogs

  • One leaps high in the air. (source)
  • Swarms of Demo-dogs are constantly faced in the game by all characters. They’re able to take tons of attacks, fight with bites and leaping strikes, and as a baseline all of them can heal themselves with regeneration and inflict a venom status effect on opponents. (source)
  • A swarm of Demo-dogs are able to overrun Gilthunder, Griamore, and Howzer after they’ve already been beaten in a boss fight, forcing Griamore to use his power to hold them off. (source)

Other Appearances

  • You can also hop off the Battle Bus in Fortnite dressed as a Demogorgon. This is a costume, not the real thing. (source)
  • The tabletop game Dungeons and Dragons released a Stranger Things branded starter kit which included official statistics and a bio for the Demogorgon. (source)
  • A text version of this info can be found here. (source)
  • The Demogorgon briefly appears in a short VR experience made by Netflix based on the series. You can hear it smash some stuff, break in through a window, and it jumpscares you at the end. (source)
  • Its appearance causes a TV to shut off and start playing weird static, a light to flicker on, a painting to fall from a wall, then it pops out from the wall behind you as if it were elastic and pulls you in to the Upside Down. (source)
  • After that, all it does is run around growling for a bit until a man shows up in the room, when it then bursts down through a ceiling, pounces the man to the ground, and violently claws at him. (source)
  • It takes notice of you and attacks, but the man is able to deck it with a punch and drags you back out of the Upside Down. (source)
  • However, the Demogorgon bounds through the portal and kills you after some rubble falls and kills the man. (source)
  • Multiple Demogorgons also appeared in the Los Angeles-based “Stranger Things: The Drive-Into Experience” which ran from 2020-2021. (source)
  • Multiple Demogorgons also appeared in a Halloween Horror Nights attraction at Universal Studios in 2018-2019. (source)
  • It’s faced as an enemy in the official Stranger Things pinball table, where you have to shoot balls at its face to defeat it. (source)
