Groot
Little is known about Groot’s history, only that he met Rocket shortly before the events of Guardians of the Galaxy. They worked as bounty hunters together, Groot’s muscle and ability to manipulate his own body complementing Rocket’s small stature, but great intelligence and gadgets. When the Guardians of the Galaxy formed, he continued to serve this role until he ultimately gave his life saving the rest of the party. A fragment of his body was replanted, allowing a new Groot to be grown. While he would leave his plant pot soon enough, he was still young, needing to grow from a young child into a teenager over the course of several years. Groot is capable of only saying ‘I Am Groot’ (outside of a single instance of him saying ‘We Are Groot’), though he is actually saying things, with people coming to understand him after being around him for a period or studying the language.

Durability

- Makes 700 consecutive ‘jumps’ in a spaceship (the max safe number at a time being 50 jumps), causing his body to warp, and comes out the other side with no lasting issues (source) (Vol.2)

- Is close to a blast from Thanos’ ship as it rains fire. These blasts send people flying into the air and could kill Chitauri Leviathans (source) (IW)
- Takes a slash from Gamora’s sword and takes a couple to each limb before it’s lopped off. Their clash ends with Gamora embedding her sword in Groot’s stomach, which he’s hurt by but remains standing afterwards (source) (GotG)

Abilities
- Grapples a small creature with a stretched arm and pulls himself towards it, retracting the stretched arm back into himself as he does so (source) (Vol.2)
