Avatar: The Last Airbender

Katara

Katara

Katara began the series of Avatar: The Last Airbender as the only waterbender in the Southern Water Tribe with little instruction or knowledge of the mystical art. Through raw talent, dedicated study, and valuable instruction from some of waterbending’s foremost masters Katara rose to the rank of master herself. By the time of the sequel series The Legend of Korra Katara was legendary among waterbenders and known as the foremost healing expert in the world.

Strengths

  • Katara is an extremely versatile fighter, embodying fully waterbending’s specialty of seamlessly blending attack and defense. The above links demonstrate well her ability to segue between attack, defense, and evasion. While fans of the show would recognize Azula as one of the deadliest fighters in the series, Katara managed to subdue her with relative ease in Crossroads of Destiny (where Azula needed Zuko’s help to free herself) and even ultimately triumphed over Azula in Sozin’s Comet, where Azula’s powers were greatly enhanced by the titular comet.

Weaknesses

  • While Katara is extremely resourceful in using any source of water available to her, obviously her influence is more limited the less water there is. Although she is capable of bending with her legs, Katara’s first fight with Ty Lee shows her reliance on using her arms. That said, it should be noted that Katara later adapted in their second stand-off and did not allow Ty Lee access to her arms.
