Born into a privileged Fire Nation family, Mai learned severe discipline and restraint at an early age. Her childhood friendship with her nation’s royal family eventually spurred Mai into helping Princess Azula hunt down the Avatar, but Mai’s feelings for Prince Zuko eventually caused her allegiances to shift. Though her relationship with Zuko eventually ended, she continued to defend his honor and legacy against the New Ozai Society that sought to replace him. Mai was highly skilled in wielding shuriken with pinpoint accuracy. She would most often alternate between throwing knives or darts, although her darts she could also fire from concealed bracelets around her wrists and ankles. She also proved a capable hand-to-hand fighter in her own right.
