The Karate Kid

Mr. Miyagi

Mr. Miyagi

Nariyoshi Miyagi was born in Okinawa, Japan in 1925. Like all Miyagis before him, his father taught him Miyagi-Do Karate, first developed by his ancestor. When he was young, he fell in love with a girl named Yukie. However, Yukie was arranged to marry his best friend Sato, and when they declared their love, Sato felt dishonored and challenged Miyagi in a fight to the death to restore his honor. Refusing to fight his friend, Miyagi left Okinawa, immigrating to Hawaii, where he met and fell in love with another woman. After moving to Los Angeles, California, Miyagi enlisted in the US Army and fought in WWII as part of the 442nd Infantry Regiment, where he earned the Medal of Honor. During his service, however, Mrs. Miyagi and their unborn son died in an internment camp, which would haunt Miyagi for decades to come. Eventually, Miyagi started working as a handyman in an apartment complex in Reseda. While working there, he met Daniel LaRusso, who had moved to California from New Jersey, and taught him karate in order to help with the bullying he was facing at school, beginning a friend- and mentorship that lasted for the rest of Miyagi’s life.
