Animorphs

Rachel

Rachel

Earth is under attack by parasitic slug-like aliens known as Yeerks, who infest human brains. The Animorphs, a group of five young kids and an alien, are given Andalite morphing technology, allowing them to absorb DNA and transform into animals. Rachel, one of the original six Animorphs, is the team’s bruiser. While initially an ordinary teenage gymnast and shopping enthusiast, her love for combat developed from the thrill of battle. This violent streak serves as both an asset and a detriment to the Animorphs’ war against the Yeerks. Her elephant and grizzly bear morphs are noted as among the strongest on the team. Feats are tagged with book and chapter numbers (e.g., B#C# for Main series, C#C# for Chronicles, M#C# for Megamorphs). Feats from Megamorphs 4 are from an alternate reality, and feats from book 32 are from a time when Rachel was split into two Rachels; both are considered equivalent to the original Rachel. Information for Rachel’s Super-Rachel form from book 48 is in a linked comment.

  • With her foot, flips a bottle through the air at a woman to make her flinch. (source) (M4C10)

Morphing: Overview - General Info

  • The power to morph allows copying the DNA of an animal via touch, then turning into that animal. (source) (B1C3)
  • Cannot stay in animal form for more than two hours, or else they will be trapped as that animal forever. (source) (B1C4)
  • Transforming takes about a few minutes. (source) (B1C7)
  • New morphs can only be acquired in human form, not from another morph. (source) (B49C1)
  • They must cycle back into their original (human) form if they want to change morphs. (source) (B49C1)
  • They partially feel like an animal while morphed and are affected by their instincts (e.g., Tobias feeling compulsion to chase strings and eat mice as a cat). (source) (B1C8)
  • Morphing with clothing is possible, but only if it’s tight clothing. (source) (B1C11)
  • Any injuries incurred in animal form are healed when changing back to human form. (source) (B4C12)
  • Healing from morphing includes poison. (source) (B11C13)
  • One Animorph gets their stomach sliced open as an orca and has their guts spill out, but is able to morph the injury off. (source) (B36C7/8)

Morphing: Overview - Acquiring

  • When acquiring DNA for a new morph, the animal goes into a trance and allows it to happen. (source) (B1C19)
  • The trance lasts for ten seconds after taking the hand off the animal. (source) (B1C9)
  • Morphs can be acquired from blood, and it is impossible to contract diseases while morphing. (source) (B18C7)
  • Surgical alterations to an acquired animal are irrelevant since the morph is copied from DNA; Marco acquires a cobra with removed poison sacs but still morphs into a cobra with poison sacs. (source) (B21C19)
  • Normally, acquired animals can be morphed into at any time, but morphs acquired while displaced in space/time are not retained. (source) (M2C37)
  • The DNA of acquired animals floats around in the bloodstream and can be detected from a blood sample. (source) (B18C7 / B49C4)

Morphing: Overview - Thought-speak

  • While morphed into an animal, they can telepathically communicate with others in place of speech. (source) (B1C8)
  • It’s hard to tell where the telepathy is coming from. (source) (B2C1)
  • There is a distance limit to thought-speak; Rachel in a house could barely communicate with Tobias in hawk form, and the connection broke in the basement. (source) (B2C12)
  • Thought-speak can either be heard by everyone or beamed to a specific person. (source) (M1C33)
  • “Private” thought-speak can still be beamed to more than just one person. (source) (B29C10)
  • All species can understand Andalite thought-speak because it is beyond words. (source) (M2C4)

Morphing: Overview - Other

  • The Animorphs could do the “fly inside someone as a bug and grow to kill them” trick, but it would kill them too. (source) (B32C33)
  • When morphing an animal smaller than the original form, the excess mass is held in an alternate dimension. (source) (B10C9)
  • Naturally-occurring biological metamorphosis resets the two-hour morphing clock; Cassie re-morphed to human after undergoing metamorphosis into a butterfly. (source) (B19C27)
  • People with morphing powers give off a unique energy signature detectable with special technology. (source) (B24C16)
  • Earlier in the series, this energy signature was established as only being given off by the process of morphing, but that was contradicted later. (source) (M1C18)
  • People with morphing powers are capable of performing the Frolis Maneuver, allowing them to acquire DNA from multiple sources and combine it into one single morph. (source) (C1C45)
  • Ax used the Frolis Maneuver, acquiring DNA from different human Animorphs to make a human morph for himself, and was able to pick his sex somehow during the process. (source) (B4C24)

Morphing: Skill

  • Starts running up a staircase while still actively demorphing from elephant to human. (source) (B1C26)
  • Manipulates her cat form just enough to create fingers to unlock a cat carrier from the inside. (source) (B2C18)
  • Manages to morph to human from mouse even with the timer ending mid-morph, trapping her as a rat girl for a short period, then transforming back to completely human with intense focus. (source) (B48C23)
  • While still actively demorphing from fly, attacks Marco, gets her arms around his throat and sucks on his face with her proboscis to shut off his air. She’s also able to take a punch to the stomach. (source) (B32C18/19)
