Sin-Eater

Stan Carter was the son of two New York City drug addicts, with his father dying before he was born and his mother entering rehab, leaving him to be raised by his paternal grandparents in the Ozark Mountains. His grandfather, a fervent preacher, emotionally abused him for his father’s sins. After his grandfather’s accidental death, Stan witnessed a sin-eater ritual where a social outcast ate fruit from the body to absorb the deceased’s sins. This experience haunted him until his recovered mother took him to New York. Stan became an NYPD detective but suffered a mental break upon discovering his partner’s involvement with drug dealers, leading him to kill them and adopt the Sin-Eater identity with a mask inspired by the ritual. He went on a killing spree, murdering Spider-Man’s friend, police captain Jean DeWolff, and was stopped by Spider-Man and Daredevil. Institutionalized and later haunted by his actions, he committed suicide by cop, indirectly contributing to Venom’s creation. In the afterlife, he endured hell before being resurrected by the demon Kindred (secretly Harry Osborn), granting him abilities to absorb sins and superpowers.
