Vibranium

Vibranium

A nearly indestructible metal and one of if not the hardest substance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Vibranium is an incredibly rare substance all around the globe. The sole exception to this is Wakanda, founded on top of a giant meteorite comprised of the metal. Not only being insanely durable but also incredibly versatile, it is frequently used by those involved in superheroics in a number of ways.

General Physicals

  • Described as stronger than steel while being a third of the weight and completely vibration absorbent (source) (CA)
  • Described by a Wakandan as being the strongest substance in the universe (source) (BP)
  • An ancient tool made of vibranium has the rust vibrated off of it by Klaue’s hand (source) (BP)
  • In its raw form, transporting vibranium at high speeds can be very dangerous, causing Shuri to create sonic dampeners to render it inert (source) (BP)
  • Sonic attacks have an affect on processed vibranium too, with the Black Panther suit constantly breaking apart and reforming while under the effect of the aforementioned sonic dampeners (source) (BP)
  • Doesn’t activate metal detectors (source) (BP)
  • An object in a pure vibranium shell was shown to be magnetic (source) (S2E15)
  • Can be destroyed, with Captain America’s shield being hacked to pieces by Thanos (source) (End)
  • S.H.I.E.L.D. believed they had a laser capable of cutting through it, though this is never seen in action (source) (S2E18)

Captain America’s Shield

  • Blocks gunfire (source) (CA)
  • Blocks a strike from Thor (source) (Av)
  • Blocks a helicopter blade (source) (FW6)
  • Unaffected by a stab from a vibranium spear (source) (FW4)
  • Sharp enough to be embedded in Ultron’s chest after he withstood aircraft gunfire (source) (AoU)
  • Can be ricocheted off of objects and people before being caught (source) (CA)

Winter Soldier’s Arm

  • Blocks strikes from a Flag Smasher wielding a metal girder before taking the girder and attacking them with it (source) (FW6)
  • Grabs a firing gun, stopping the bullet (source) (FW3)
  • After being hit into a pillar hard enough to take down Bucky and make his arm spark and glitch, is shortly after fighting without any issues (source) (FW5)

Black Panther’s Habit

  • Is bulletproof and protects against explosions, though this disrupts the suit’s effects slightly (source) (BP)
  • Stores kinetic energy that can be later released (source) (BP)
  • Loses this charge after being hit by an explosion (source) (BP)
  • Loses this charge after being slammed into the ground hard enough to knock T’Challa out (source) (IW)
  • Can be stored inside a teeth necklace and activated telepathically (source) (BP)

Other Wakandan Technology - Weapons

  • Collapsing spears which can pierce through a vibranium car on extending. These cars are bulletproof (source) (BP)
  • Is thrown through a car and embeds in the road. The car then crashes into it with the spear remaining unmoved (source) (BP)
  • Can electrify part of its handle (source) (BP)
  • Two spears tapping the ground simultaneously appear to take out the lights in a room (source) (BP)
  • A mass of spears tapping the floor of a boat simultaneously cause a shockwave to ripple out both along the surface of a river and underwater, activating a device on the riverbed (source) (BP)
  • Other spears can create sonic blasts which can destroy tanks (source) (BP)
  • One weapon had blue energy cover it after being unsheathed, though its nature is unknown (source) (BP)
  • Sonic blasters which cover Shuri’s hands, the blasts sending Wakandan guards flying back (source) (BP)
  • Hurts and forces down Killmonger in his Panther Habit with extended beams while he tanked through single blasts. However, he immediately recovered after destroying the weapons (source) (BP)
  • Can shoot extended beams (source) (End)

Other Wakandan Technology - Kimoyo Beads

  • Bracelets made of several balls which have a variety of functions, such as being able to make and receive calls with realistic holograms of the other person. Two bracelets can merge their images if they’re taking the same call (source) (BP)
  • Records videos with a holographic screen that comes from the beads (source) (BP)
  • Beads were placed along Sam’s, Bucky’s, and Zemo’s paths to spy on them (source) (FW3)
  • Scans Vision, looking at his programming and whether it’s possible to remove the Mind Stone from him (source) (IW)
  • Calls down a jet and makes it visible (source) (BP)
  • Okoye uses them to activate vibranium-transporting trains in Wakanda (source) (BP)
  • Used to stabilize Agent Ross after he had been shot with a bullet in his spine (source) (BP)
  • Alerts the wearer when Thanos’ ships enter the atmosphere (source) (IW)
  • Can be turned off to avoid being found (source) (BP)

Other Wakandan Technology - Vehicles

  • Creates very quiet jets which can turn completely invisible (source) (BP)
  • Lets loose a shockwave to destroy other vehicles latching onto it with electric grapples, though this (or the electricity being charged through it) forced it to reboot (source) (BP)
  • Catches itself immediately after falling while needing to reboot (source) (BP)
  • Piloted without physical controls (source) (BP)
  • Jets which fire electric grapples to latch onto other jets (source) (BP)
  • Bulletproof vibranium cars (source) (BP)
  • Small devices that can hijack vehicles and allow Shuri to control them from her workshop with full view of what’s around the vehicle (source) (BP)
  • Hijacks a Wakandan jet (source) (BP)
  • Highlights upcoming obstacles (source) (BP)
  • If the vehicle is destroyed, the representation in Shuri’s lab disappears (source) (BP)

Other Wakandan Technology - Clothing

  • Clothes which create an energy shield when swung in front of the wearer (source) (BP)
  • Blocks an energy bolt from a spear which Killmonger claims can destroy a tank (source) (BP)
  • Shoes which form around a foot when it’s placed on the sole and absorb all sound made by the foot (source) (BP)

Other Wakandan Technology - Other

  • Put a large shield over their cities, making it look like uninhabited forest from the outside but can be passed through at specific points (source) (BP)
  • Protects against one of Thanos’ ships falling down from the upper atmosphere when it lands on it (source)
  • When pushed against, it does give, but quickly patches itself to cut off any limbs or bodies inside it (source) (IW)
  • A table of black beads which forms into the shape of a convoy they’re travelling over, allowing T’Challa to pick up a specific vehicle, swipe away the roof to see the people inside, and have a particular person highlighted (source) (BP)
  • Another such table can drop away its beads to reveal a mass of gear beneath the surface (source) (BP)
  • EMP devices which stop cars after being thrown on their bonnets. These can’t be pulled off by regular people (source) (BP)
  • Communication devices described as having unlimited range. They can also be used for audio surveillance with T’Challa placing it on the back of Agent Ross’ shoulder, allowing him and anyone else with the device on their neck to hear what’s being said in an interrogation room (source) (BP)
  • A medbay which Shuri uses to identify where Agent Ross has been shot and fully heal him overnight. It also displays information about the person who’s lying on it around their head and on the walls surrounding the bay (source) (BP)
  • Made a new arm for the Winter Soldier after his original was destroyed (source) (IW)

Vision

  • Punches through an Ultron drone and tears it in two (source) (AoU)
  • Takes hits from Corvus before taking a hammer strike from Cull Obsidian, who sent Iron Man through a building (source) (IW)
  • Presumably through an unexplained combination of the vibranium and mind stone, can phase through objects and beings (source) (CW)

Other Uses

  • Used to make bullets which can pierce through T’Challa’s original Panther Habit (source) (BPP)
  • While used on Ultron’s final body, endures being shot with Vision’s beam, two Iron Man repulsors, and Thor’s lightning for a period before starting to break away. After they let up, Ultron continues to stand up and speak, before getting punched away by Hulk (source) (AoU)
  • Used in the walls of a S.H.I.E.L.D. aircraft’s interrogation chamber which could hold an Asgardian (source) (S1E8)
  • A similar looking wall in another S.H.I.E.L.D. location is suggested to have been dented by a punch from the Hulk, who built said house (source) (S2E15)
  • Used to create an engine that lifts a large amount of rock into the air, with Ultron intending to use it as an apocalyptic meteor. It’s all kept together through the vibranium core being given a ‘magnetic feed’ (source) (AoU)
  • Nick Fury gave Coulson the Toolbox, a device storing S.H.I.E.L.D. records which is covered in a pure vibranium shell, only accessible through biometrics (source) (S1E22)
  • These biometrics are ‘constantly shifting’ microscopic pores, though they can be tricked, allowing functions like contacting a far away tablet for a video call to be accessed (source) (S2E16)
  • Displays interactive holograms (source) (S2E2)

Other

  • A vibranium meteor affected the plant life in Wakanda, likely being the cause for the heart-shaped herb’s (the plant which gives the Black Panther their enhanced physicals) existence (source) (BP)
  • A device was created to show the precise location of vibranium objects (source) (S2E15)
